Sen. Jack Reed, a longtime friend of Nuala and Claiborne, remembered Mrs. Pell as “an extraordinary woman whose grace and decency infused everything she did and everything Senator Pell did. She was just a wonderful person.” Reed won election in 1996 to the seat Pell held for 36 years before deciding to retire.

Reed's colleagues called her a passionate adocate for the arts, noble causes and the common good.

She was honored in 2013 for a lifetime of public service at Salve Regina University where the school established the Nuala Pell Leadership Program in Public Service.
